Showing him what he as done wrong and telling him off is the right thing to do, but then immediately take him out of the house and leave him for a while, he should soon get the message instead of leaving you some.
I am assuming you have a garden of course.

He probably has a mild case of separation anxiety when you are away from him.
Your husband isn’t helping matters at all. Tell him to stop telling the dog off after the event, we know that’s futile. He’ll make the dog afraid of him. That’s why it’s cowering in the corner. He knows your husband is angry with him but he doesn’t know why.

your dog is ‘acting guilty’ when you come home because he has gotten used to being told off when you and your husband come home. this telling off is no help – dogs are not as intelligent as us, believe it or not but he will not put 2 and 2 together and will not realise that you are unhappy with the mess in the bathroom. what you are witnessing is submission on the part of the dog which is a form of self defense – they are pack animals after all.

how long do you be away for when he does this?? if you are away too long it could be because he is bored and this is his way of expressing this boredom.

i hope you can solve this problem

ps the first answer is incorrect, do not pay any attention to it

Maybe he just doesn’t like this cold weather either and just likes the warmth under foot and waits till he’s back inside…

Has anything changed or new to the house lately???

this is because the toilet smells of urine ect thats were the dog feels he should wee, my son used to wee the bed and if the dog went up in to his room he would wee in his room to mark his territory.when u go out for a long time the dog is bound to want to go to the toilet, i think your being a bit harsh with your dog as hes doing it in the bathroom, it shows he is clever to think about were he goes, he knows that on the carpet is a no no go area, rr poor thing.

Im not sure of the reason, but make sure you use a special cleaner because some cleaners contain chemicals that to your dog may actually smell like urine and could be encouraging your dog to go there again. Also showing the dog could have actually made it worse because the dog will then try to hide it. But, if you’ve stopped that and he still goes then i’m not sure what you could do. Is there any chance you could keep the door closed when you go out. Also if your dog knows it has been bad it could be a form of anxiety. Hope i helped, good luck.
