I have had the same frustration. They really don’t make a good home product as far as an aerosol can etc. Rug doctor or a professional is your best bet but it is costly. There is a product I have used that I found at Lowe’s. It is a creme and called something Goo. It is white and comes in a white can. If you rub it in the carpet and scrub your stain will come clean. However, it is time consuming.
I use a product that I found at Home Depot call Spot Shot, it is the best thing I have ever seen for getting out stains… and it isn’t that expensive around $4 a can here… but it even got out the oil stains my brother’s boots left all over my carpet.
it really depends on what the stain is. Even professional cleaners will have a hard time with stains if they do not know what caused it.
As for getting them cleaned or cleaning them with a rug doctor, not if you are having people over the next day. chances are it will not be completely dry.
for a home recipe, try pouring a little hydrogen peroxide on the stain and blotting it with a white towel
